We use the concept of geometrical angular spectrum to understand illumination attributes of gemstones such as brilliance, fire, and scintillation. We discuss some ray tracing techniques to extract useful information and provide insight into how to form metrics related to such illumination attributes. The metrics can be used to form grading systems based on the optical performance of gemstones.
